Netflix just can’t get enough of the sprawling animation and fantasy. The streaming service has announced that it will adapt the popular Redwall Brian Jacques books, a The iron Throne-like a series that follows the heroic adventures of mice, moles and rabbits living in Redwall Abbey. Notably for animation fans, Netflix also brought in Patrick McHale, the creator of Cartoon Network’s haunting. Above the garden wall, to develop a film based on the first Redwall delivered. Additionally, a TV series will follow Martin the Warrior, a mouse whose legendary adventures would later inspire the citizens of Redwall.

The real question is what these adaptations will look like. Above the garden wall was a landmark for modern 2D animation, but we also see a lot of Netflix’s CG series, like last year’s Ghost in the Shell. Perhaps Netflix could try out different styles of animation for each entry in the series. But after seeing how Avatar: The Last Airbender and The legend of Korra played, both of which were historical 2D animated series, I hope Netflix sees the value of traditional animation.
“Brian has traveled the world often to tell his stories about Redwall to young audiences, most often in their schools,” Alan Ingram, representative of The Redwall Abbey Company, said in a statement. “Brian would have been very happy to see Netflix share his joy and desire to bring his stories to life as a new world of movies, series and potentially so much more for audiences of all ages.”
