Netflix is developing an original animated series based on the Terminator, with acclaimed animation studio Production IG on board. The new animated series “will approach Terminator in a way that breaks convention, subverts expectations and has real guts,” according to showrunner and executive producer Mattson Tomlin.
The project will be the Terminator franchise’s first foray into animation, following six live-action films and a television series, Fox’s Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles.
“Terminator is one of the most iconic sci-fi stories ever created – and has only become more and more relevant to our world over time,” said John Derderian, vice president of Japan and from the anime at Neflix, in a press release. “The new animated series will explore this universe in a way that has never been done before. We can’t wait for fans to experience this incredible new chapter in the epic battle between machines and humans. ”
Skydance and Netflix brought in Production IG, the veteran anime production studio known for their work on shows like Ghost in the Shell, Haikyu !! and Psycho-Pass, to develop Terminator. Mitsuhisa Ishikawa, President and CEO of Production IG, said in a press release: “I asked my friend and longtime colleague Mamoru Oshii what he thought of the idea of turning Terminator into an animated series. His response was “Ishikawa, are you crazy? At that moment, I was convinced that we should get on board. As big fans, our Production IG team put their whole heart and soul into creating this series. We hope the fans enjoy it! “
Tomlin’s credits include writing the stories for Matt Reeves’ upcoming one The batman, Netflix Project powerand Capcom’s Mega Man movie. Now he’s tasked with transforming the Terminator franchise after the most recent big property failure, the cold received Terminator: Dark Fate.
Netflix has not announced a release window or title for its Terminator anime.
