Quentin Tarantino has brought a "long version" of his controversial western roadshow The Hateful Eight Netflix, but not as you think. It's a mini-series of four 50-minute episodes and the reactions have been confusing to say the least. Why would a coherent film, which already had six "chapters", be divided into four?
Now, Tarantino himself has spoken – and he says SlashFILM that this is the experience that Netflix wanted him to achieve:
So Netflix came to us and said, "Hey, look, if you're interested, if there are even more videos, [and] if you want to put it together so that you can put it in three or four episodes, depending on the number of additional sequences you have, we would be willing to do that. "
Tarantino says that the "extended version" contains about 25 minutes of new content and that the scenes do not unfold in the same way. The episodic format has allowed him to display a sequence of keys from the point of view of different characters (I will not spoil it here).
We know that Netflix has experimented with new formats such as interactive stories, choose your own adventure, like Black Mirror: Bandersnatch and You vs wild, in addition to producing its own television shows with high-end production values that were previously rare outside the film. Tarantino has now evoked the intriguing possibility that movies are not necessarily movies, and that Netflix is interested in finding out.
