Netflix announced Wednesday that it will require proof of COVID vaccination for all employees working near actors on sets in the United States – the first major studio to make the jab mandatory.

The ruling will apply to anyone who works in “Area A,” which means actors and those in close proximity to them, Deadline reported.

Last week, Hollywood unions and major movie studios met and agreed on a new plan to limit disruptions caused by the pandemic, which gave producers “the opportunity to implement policies of compulsory vaccination for the actors and the team in zone A on a production by production basis. ‘

Netflix has decided to make politics a routine for all of its American productions.

The vaccination mandate is the strongest measure Netflix can take under current return-to-work protocols, the site reported.

Medical, religious or age exemptions may apply on Netflix sets, a source told The Hollywood Reporter.

Additionally, shows and movies already in production with Netflix may continue even if some members of the production are not vaccinated – although these exceptions are likely to be rare.

There have been calls within the industry to expand the vaccination requirement beyond Zone A.

Sean Penn announced last week that he will not be returning to set the Watergate drama Gaslit, in which he stars alongside Julia Roberts, until all cast and crew are vaccinated.

Sean Penn is seen at the Cannes Film Festival on July 11. He returned from the event and insisted he would not return to filming until the entire production was vaccinated.

NBCUniversal said they would insist on vaccinations for everyone in Zone A, but Penn said it wasn’t enough and the entire production team needed to be vaccinated.

The current state of the shoot was unclear. Penn would have had several weeks of filming to complete.

The Oscar-winning actor has offered to facilitate the vaccination effort, free of charge, through his relief organization, CORE.

The move comes amid growing concern about the spread of the Delta variant.

On July 17, Los Angeles County became the first in the country to re-impose mask warrants. St Louis, Missouri and Savannah, Georgia have since followed suit. In Las Vegas, employees are again required to wear face masks, although guests are not required to.

On Wednesday, Twitter announced that it was closing its two largest offices – in New York and San Francisco – amid the increase in cases.

Twitter opened its offices two weeks ago and required proof of vaccination for all employees wishing to return to the office.

Previously, Google and Facebook had said they would require proof of vaccination for everyone returning to the office in October.
