This semester, a scholarship will be awarded to each class year. After that, an incoming freshman will receive the scholarship every year. Dramatic arts students will be considered first.
“It is with immense pleasure and deep gratitude that we announce the creation of a scholarship in honor of former student Chadwick Boseman, whose life and contributions to the arts continue to inspire,” said Dr. Wayne AI Frederick, president of Howard University. “This scholarship embodies Chadwick’s love for Howard, his passion for storytelling and his willingness to support future generations of Howard’s students. I am grateful for the continued support and partnership of Chadwick’s wife, Ms. Simone. Ledward-Boseman, and to Netflix for this important giveaway. “
Netflix co-CEO and chief content officer Ted Sarandos said in a statement: “Although [Boseman] was taken from us too soon, his spirit is always with us in his work and the good he has inspired in us. He’s always talked about his time with Howard and the positive way he’s shaped his life and career. Now we will have the opportunity to give many future superheroes the chance to experience the same thing. We are grateful to all of Simone and Chadwick’s family and our partners at Howard University for making this possible. “
The recipients will all illustrate “a search for excellence, leadership, respect, empathy and passion”, according to the school.
Boseman died in August 2020 after a private battle with colon cancer.
