Netlix announced on Friday that it would remove the controversial images of a real train blast from the hit horror film "Bird Box", which aired on the streaming giant in December.

This decision follows months of criticism that the film was exploiting the victims of the tragedy – an accident that occurred in 2013 in Lac-Mégantic, in Quebec City. At that time, a train carrying crude oil got out of the way and exploded into a fireball killing 47 people.

On Friday, the company said in a statement to the Associated Press that it would replace images with fictional scenes from an older US television series. The company declared "sorry for the suffering inflicted on the Lac-Megantic community".

Netflix licensed the images of the disaster to the Pond 5 image seller and used them in "Bird Box" to set up its awful place. The thriller directed by Sandra Bullock speaks of monstrous entities that force every human being who sees them to quickly try to commit suicide. To survive, the human gift is blindfolded.

Pond 5 originally declared in January that the film "had been taken out of context" and that the company wanted to "sincerely apologize". The film Pond 5 was also used in the science fiction series "Travelers" Netflix.

The Mayor of Lac-Mégantic, Julie Morin, had decried the use of the video, describing it as "lack of respect". Canadians had also criticized Twitter, saying the video could cause feelings of post-traumatic stress and additional victimization. .

Québec Minister of Culture and Communications Nathalie Roy applauded the latest Netflix decision. "This result shows that by being united and uniting our efforts, everything is possible," twitted Roy.

Train images are not the only controversy of the big Netflix hit. The company urged observers to stop committing such acts "Bird Box Challenges" – like driving a car with blindfold – and posting stunts on YouTube.
