Netflix launches ‘Britney vs Spears’ teaser – The Hollywood Reporter

A new Britney Spears documentary is coming.

Netflix confirmed the film’s rumor on Tuesday by tweeting an 18-second teaser with an alert that a full trailer will debut tomorrow. Title Britney vs. Spears, the clip features a voicemail message left by Spears to a lawyer at 12:29 am on January 21, 2009. “Hello, my name is Britney Spears,” he is heard saying. “I called you earlier. I’m calling back because I just wanted to make sure that during the process of removing the guardianship… ”

Documentary filmmaker Erin Lee Carr, whose name has been talked about for months as being involved, confirmed to Hollywood journalist Tuesday afternoon that she led the project, produced in collaboration with the acclaimed team of Story Syndicate, Liz Garbus and Dan Cogan. The Emmy-winning duo and Peabody is executive producer with Amy Herdy (Allen vs. Farrow) and Jenny Eliscu. Producers include Carr, Sarah Gibson (Heart of Gold: Into the Gymnastics Scandal in the United States) and Kate Berry.

The audio is striking in that Britney Spears told Los Angeles judge Brenda Penny this summer that she didn’t know she could apply for the end of the guardianship she has lived under for 13 years. Since that explosive testimony, Britney Spears has been allowed in a follow-up hearing to hire her own lawyer rather than continue with a court-appointed lawyer, as is common in trusteeship agreements.

“I just want my life back,” Britney Spears said in June. “It’s been 13 years and that’s enough. It’s been a long time since I owned my money. And it is my wish and my dream that it all ends up untested.

The singer hired litigation attorney Mathew Rosengart, who acted swiftly by demanding that her father, Jamie Spears, who played a leading role in the arrangement, be removed from guardianship altogether. Rosengart said THR last month: “Britney Spears will not be the victim of intimidation or extortion by her father. Mr. Spears is also prohibited from attempting to hold his daughter hostage by setting the conditions for her removal. It is not about him, it is about the best interests of his daughter, who by law demands that he be removed. Even putting aside the legal issues requiring his quick dismissal, if he loves his daughter Mr Spears is expected to resign now, today, before being suspended. It would be the correct and decent thing to do.

News of the project comes just days after the singer’s father filed a petition on September 7 to end it. A hearing on the petition and other important issues in the case is currently set for September 29.

As for Carr, she comes to Project Spears after working with Netflix on How to fix a drug scandal and with HBO on I Love You, Now Die: The Commonwealth vs Michelle Carter, the two documentaries that saw her navigate the legal system, courtrooms and sensitive topics. She is also well known as the author of the memoirs All you leave behind and as the daughter of famous journalist and author David Carr.

The anticipation for the project is already overdrive. In less than three hours after Netflix released the teaser on Twitter, it has been viewed over half a million times. Public fascination with the singer’s story – and the whirlwind around the #FreeBritney movement – has grown significantly since Hulu’s Coaching Britney Spears debuted in February, a documentary made in collaboration with FX as part of its The New York Times presents series.
