Netflix reportedly plotting a game service and PlayStation could be a partner

Netflix appears poised to enter the gaming arena, having announced earlier this week that he has hired ex-EA executive Mike Verdu to lead his expansion into the lucrative sector. While this could potentially be seen as another headache for market leader PlayStation, it’s possible that the Japanese giant could see it as an opportunity as well – and if we are to believe the footage taken from the service’s app. streaming, a potential partnership may be underway.

According to dataminer Steve Moser, there are already video game references in the source code for the Netflix app, including a logo for a service called “N Game,” as well as assets for a few unbranded DualSense controllers and the Ghost of Tsushima artwork. These could be stray leftovers from the tests, but they have certainly fueled speculation.

After all, Sony is already in bed with Netflix, having signed a multi-year U.S. licensing agreement that will see Sony Pictures Entertainment films like Unexplored come first on the streaming service after their theatrical release windows and home entertainment.

There’s unlikely to be too much substance here – Netflix’s adventure in video games seems to be at an early stage anyway – but it’s still fascinating nonetheless. Could Sony, perhaps, view Netflix as a valuable ally against Game Pass and other disruptive business models? It’s far too early to make those kinds of calls, but it will be interesting to see how this story unfolds – especially as the media giant formulates its strategy for entering an extremely competitive market.
