Netflix won more Emmys than any other network or platform for the first time, with the streaming giant taking home 44 awards in total in 2021.
Not only did Netflix win the most Emmys for the year, but it did so while also winning more than double the total number of awards from its closest competition. HBO and HBO Max, by comparison, won 19 awards in total. Netflix has also more than doubled its winning total from last year, when it won 21 statuettes.
Netflix entered the Primetime Emmys with 34 Creative Arts Emmys wins. The streamer went on to win 10 other awards, including wins for Gillian Anderson, Olivia Colman and Josh O’Connor for their roles in “The Crown” and for Ewan McGregor for Best Actor in a Limited Series for his lead role in “Halston. “The Crown” also won Best Drama Series and Best Direction and Writing for a Drama Series. The drama about the British royal family won 11 Emmys in total, tying Netflix’s “The Queen’s Gambit” for most wins for an individual show of the year. The chess drama starring Anya Taylor-Joy took home the coveted Best Limited Series award to close the telecast.
Netflix is in the running for Emmy’s biggest win since entering the awards race years ago. He’s been a multiple-time HBO finalist and came closest to beating the premium cable maker when the two were tied with 23 wins each in 2018.

HBO, the perennial favorite, was no slouch, however. The premium cable company, along with its streaming partner HBO Max, started the night with 10 Creative Arts Emmys awards. “Hacks” and “Mare of Easttown” both had multiple victories, including Best Actress in a Comedy Series for “Hacks” star Jean Smart and Best Limited Series Actress for Kate Winslet in “Mare. of Easttown “. Elsewhere, Michaela Cole won the award for best writing for a limited series for “I May Destroy You”.
Disney Plus only earned one Primetime Emmys victory, with “Hamilton” taking home the award for Best Pre-Recorded Variety Special. However, the streamer has won more awards overall than last year. Disney Plus won 14 total awards in 2021, up from eight in 2020. Apple TV Plus has also seen its fortunes improve year on year, winning 10 Emmy Awards in total thanks in large part to the comedy “Ted Lasso” . The show not only won Best Comedy Series, but also won victories in three comedy actor categories – Best Actor (Jason Sudeikis), Best Supporting Actress (Hannah Waddingham), and Best Supporting Actor (Brett Goldstein) . Apple TV Plus won only one victory in 2020.
Other Amazon and Hulu streamers did not fare as well, with both being shut out this year. Amazon won four Emmy Awards last year while Hulu won one in 2020.
HBO and HBO Max topped all nominees this year with 130 nominations combined, followed closely by Netflix with 129. Disney Plus was third with 71 total nominations.
“The Crown” and “The Mandalorian” tied for most program nominations this year with 24 each. “WandaVision” was next with 23, followed by “The Handmaid’s Tale” and “Saturday Night Live” with 21, “Ted Lasso” with 20, “Lovecraft Country and” The Queen’s Gambit “with 18, and” Mare of Easttown ” with 16.
