More than 30,000 people have signed a petition calling on Netflix to remove “Cuties,” a movie they say sexualizes children.
The film, which premiered at this year’s Sundance Film Festival, debuts on the streaming service on September 9. The trailer was released earlier this week on YouTube. It has an NC-17 rating, according to Jam Press.
“Eleven-year-old Amy begins to rebel against the traditions of her conservative family when she is fascinated by a free-spirited dance team,” the site read.
However, Metro reports that the original summary was much salacious: “Amy, 11, is fascinated by a twerk dance team. Hoping to join them, she begins to explore her femininity, defying the traditions of her family.
Netflix told point of sale that the changes were made to ensure accuracy. They later apologized after the reaction.
The main character, Amy, is a young Senegalese Muslim who lives in a poor neighborhood in France.
The French film, which also goes through “Mignonnes”, was written and directed by Maïmouna Doucouré, also Senegalese. She won the jury award at Sundance for directing the film.
His inspiration for the film came from seeing an amateur talent show in Paris. “There were these girls on stage dressed really sexy in short, see-through clothes,” the director first told ScreenDaily. “They danced in a very sexually suggestive way. It also happened that there were a number of African mothers in the audience. I was transfixed, watching with a mixture of shock and awe. I wondered if these young girls understood what they were doing.
She spent a year interviewing local children to find out why they wanted to act this way.
The petitioners claim that the film exploits children. “The movie ‘Cuties’ shows children dressed in provocative fashion, dancing sexually and is rated only for adult viewers,” read their post on Change.org. “It was created for the entertainment of adult pedophiles. Please sign the petition to protect our children from exploitation in movies. “
Some Twitter users were also furious. Much of the anger was directed at the film’s marketing poster, which shows the young cast posing in cut-out dance costumes.
“When you call a movie ‘Cuties’ and promote it like this: it sexualizes 11 year olds,” wrote @ iDavid76. “Shame on you, @Netflix.”
Multiple Twitter users compared the French marketing of the film playing Netflix.
“The thing about the Netflix campaign for Cuties is how disgusting and sexualized these girls are,” posted @ wwarrior_1. “Compare Netflix’s poster and blurb to IMDb, s – – t is as different as night and day. Someone should get fired. “
“Black girls suffering from prejudice of adultification are very f – king real,” says another user. “No child should ever be put in a disgusting situation like this.”
