Last summer the world was hit with some truly devastating news, as actor / producer Chadwick Boseman was reported to have passed away after a four-year battle with cancer. Fans were shocked and stunned, as Boseman chose to keep his diagnosis a closely guarded secret, and all of the movies he made have taken on a sort of preciousness knowing that more will not be done. In particular, there has been a lot of anticipation for what is now the star’s final film, George C. Wolfe’s Ma Rainey’s black background, and although it won’t be available to stream until next month, the initial reactions to Netflix’s release are not only overwhelmingly positive, but many hail it as one of Boseman’s greatest works.
Based on the August Wilson play of the same name, the film is a bottle story set in 1920s Chicago and finds all of its action contained in a recording studio where a band awaits the legendary’s arrival. singer Ma Rainey (Viola Davis). Chadwick Boseman plays an ambitious trumpeter named Levee who is caught in the midst of growing tension that results from big revelations and interpersonal drama. Variety reporter Angelique Jackson is one of many who praise the work of the Black Panther star in Ma Rainey’s black background, calling his turn “magical” and “legendary:
