Netflix made their first casting announcement for the upcoming The sand man series. Tom Sturridge (On the road) will play the title role of Dream of the Endless, an anthropomorphic personification of creativity itself, while Gwendoline Christie (The iron Throne, Star Wars: The Force Awakens) will play the role of Lucifer.
Warner Bros. Bounced a DC Comics Film Adaptation ‘ The sand man in Hollywood for years. Joseph Gordon Levitt was on board to produce, and potentially star, at one point. In 2019, HBO refused to reprise the series (due to the “huge price,” according to the Hollywood Reporter) and Netflix stepped in to produce an 11-episode season.
Joining Sturridge and Christie are Vivienne Acheampong (The witches) like Lucienne, a female version of Dream’s faithful librarian, Lucien; Boyd Holbrook (Logan) like the Corinthian’s nightmare; Charles Dance (The iron Throne) as Roderick Burgess, a human magician; and Sanjeev Bhaskar (Yesterday) and Asim Chaudhry (Black mirror: Bandersnatch) like Cain and Abel, respectively.
From these roles, it seems reasonable to expect Netflix’s series to cover the first arc of The sand man, in which Dream breaks free from decades of imprisonment and sets out on a quest to reclaim his elements of power that lead him to hell and back.
The sand man is also being adapted as an audiobook. Audible announced Thursday that the series will return for the second and third seasons.
