Netflix’s squid game is all the rage so I watched the pilot

WARNING: Spoilers ahead, obviously🚨

Hello dear reader! It’s me ! Take it up with another “I watched this so you don’t have to” message. For over a week now, I have heard several people talking about this show called Squid game, so I decided to take a look!

Right off the bat, I admit that I don’t know anything about this show. Is it a game show? A drama? A comedy? An aquatic documentary? Who has to say!

So, even though no one asked, I decided to watch the first episode of the series and give you my opinion anyway:

Before we jump in, here is the synopsis that Netflix gives for Squid game:

Netflix

“Hundreds of cash-strapped players accept a strange invitation to participate in children’s games. Inside, a tempting prize awaits – with deadly stakes.”

Initial thought: I didn’t know this show was in Korean !! But I am HERE FOR THIS! I love that a foreign show makes all this buzz!

Thirty seconds and I can already do this:

This guy (aka Gi-hun, our protagonist) is trying to steal money from his mom’s bank card! I’m not rooted for this guy at all:

Netflix

Unfortunately, Gi-hun discovered the pin – it was changed from her birthday to her daughter, Ga-yeong’s birthday. The very girl he should buy a present for and instead uses those funds to bet on the fucking ponies. SMH. I won’t be angry if he dies.

I’m so angry that Gi-hun won, but I hope he uses his winnings to buy Ga-yeong a really nice birthday present:

Gi-hun’s bookies are suing him for the money he owes – and, TBH, I don’t approve of the game, but I’m not sorry that this man gets his ass kicked – and while he is on the run, he comes across this kid who I FEEL LIKE will come back into play:

Netflix

You don’t dwell on someone like that for one fell swoop.

I WAS RIGHT! The kid stole his money!

Okay, they give him a month to get the funds, but sir, DON’T SIGN ANYTHING UNLESS READ IT!

Netflix

“Notice of physical rights.” THIS! IS! SUS!

Ga-yeong is an icon and deserves a better father than Gi-hun:

Netflix

Icons only. Also, what a surprise, Gi-hun not only didn’t get her a present, he couldn’t even buy her the fried chicken she wanted!

THINGS HAPPEN !!

Netflix

Gi-hun has a month to pay off those thugs AND his mom! Not to mention the fact that he gave his daughter a crappy birthday, so I think he’s gonna play this game and have some mula, baby!

My mind immediately turned to this. I’m just saying:

It seems known … but obviously I want him to play because I have to see how it goes:

WHAT DID I SAY ABOUT READING BEFORE SIGNING SOMETHING?

Netflix

Sure you won some money in a slap game, but now this stranger OWNS YOUR BODY, SON!

Gi-hun is going to play the ~ mysterious ~ game in order to earn money to get his daughter back / prevent her from moving to America with her mother and stepfather.

Netflix

I also suppose it has something to do with paying off your debts. But it is still the most valiant thing he has done of all the episodes.

Holy shit. That’s a lot of people participating in this game …

Netflix

There are 456 people to be exact.

OMG, IT’S TT’S CHILD!

Netflix

“I didn’t run away, I just became independent.” It’s a bullet line. But also, don’t hit a young girl.

OK, we get rules! Six matches in six days, and if you win, you win money …

Netflix

… However, I don’t think I’m taking a risk when I say there is NO WAY it is so easy.

Awe, sookie sookie, now!

Netflix

They are all desperate … which means they will do anything to win.

Another day – or rather, the same day – another contract signed without reading the fine print:

Netflix

It’s worrying and it’s not going to end well.

OK, the first game is “Green Light, Red Light!” Sounds easy enough! I used to play this game when I was a kid:

Netflix

I don’t like them saying if you lose you will be “knocked out”. Like game yeeted … or life yeeted ???

Yeeted of life, I figured it out.

Netflix

Yeah … when you move, you don’t get kicked from the game; tumors. After the death of the first person, they all tried to escape, which is against the rules because you can’t move until you are allowed to do so! Needless to say, a lot of people died.

The big brother … or, I guess, the big doll, is still watching:

Work smarter, not harder. Hide behind someone so that your movements are not detected:

Netflix

I am rooting for this girl.

WAIT, WHO IS THIS MANS?

Netflix

He’s an STRANGER and he saved Gi-hun from certain death. I take that again; I am rooted for HIM.

HOLY. SHIT. Again, I didn’t know what I was getting myself into when I started this series, but now your daughter is HOOK! I will say if gore isn’t your thing maaayyybeeee stay away from this one, but if you don’t mind the bloodshed and twisted mind games then this show is for you!
