Netflix’s The Sandman: full cast revealed for DC series

With production well underway on the first season of The Sandman, Netflix has finally revealed the main cast of the DC adaptation. Tom Sturridge (Velvet Buzzsaw) stars in the Dream series (aka Morpheus), ruler of the ethereal realm known as The Dreaming.The cast also includes two Game of Thrones veterans, with Gwendoline Christie playing Lucifer Morningstar and Charles Dance playing the occultist Roderick Burgess. Narcos star Boyd Holbrook will play The Corinthian, a nightmare turned serial killer created by Morpheus.

We suspect more casting announcements will follow in the coming weeks, as Netflix has yet to reveal any other major roles like Dream’s sister Death. The streamer also hasn’t revealed a release date for the 10-episode first season.

The Sandman is an adaptation of the DC horror / fantasy comics created by Neil Gaiman, Mike Dringenberg and Sam Keith. Gaiman is executive producer of the series with Allan Heinberg and David Goyer. Heinberg also serves as showrunner. Before Netflix gave the series the green light, The Sandman spent years in development hell, including a phase where Joseph Gordon-Levitt was committed to producing and starring in a film adaptation.

“For the past thirty-three years, the Sandman characters have breathed and walked and talked in my head,” Gaiman said in a statement. “I’m incredibly happy that now, finally, they get out of my head and into reality. I can’t wait for people to see what we saw as Dream and others take flesh, and the flesh belongs. to some of the best actors in the world. It’s amazing, and I’m so grateful to the cast and all of The Sandman – Netflix, Warner Bros., DC, Allan Heinberg and David Goyer, and the Legions of Craftsmen and geniuses of the show – to have made the craziest of all my dreams come true.

According to Gaiman, the Netflix series will make some significant changes to the source material, including updating the current framework for the 21st century rather than 1989, when the comics debuted.

Interestingly, The Sandman will mark the first time that the DC Comics incarnation of Lucifer Morningstar will be played by a woman. This character was previously played by Peter Stormare in Constantine in 2005, Tom Ellis in the television series Lucifer, and Michael Sheen in the audio drama adaptation of Audible The Sandman. Although typically portrayed as a man in the comics, The Sandman’s Lucifer is an androgynous figure who Gaiman confirmed was closely modeled on a young David Bowie. Sadly, despite the Lucifer series moving from Fox to Netflix, Christie’s casting would seem to rule out any possibility that the two shows would coexist in the same universe.
