Review: The Crew 2 – PSX-Sense

Review: The Crew 2 – It's been over three years since Ivory Tower invented a pretty unique racing game, The Crew. A racing game in which you had all of the United States to do and leave everything you wanted, even on four wheels. The developer is now back with a sequel and this launches the bar drastically. More infiltration practices, more police pursuits and more limit to four wheels. Crew 2 is much, much more than that. Run, fly, sail … everything is possible and this makes The Crew 2 the most diverse racing game of all time.

Road to the summit

Where were you? newcomer on the American racing scene. Everything related to the font has been rejected, because now you have the goal of winning the Live XTRM series. It is an annual event where only the best runners can participate, whether on the road, in the water or in the air. The game starts naturally with the first episode, in which you can show what you can do and if you succeed, the entire game will open for you. Your ultimate goal? By becoming a champion of the Live XTRM series and to achieve it, you will have to defeat four champions who each have their own specialization.

Compared to the first The Crew, the story of The Crew 2 is not really better. It's a standard work to get to the top story and Ivory Tower has not put a lot of effort into it. Each accompanying video in a new episode of the Live XTRM series is the same and if you have successfully completed individual disciplines, you will see insignificant cinematics. The developer does not take it too seriously, because if you look at all the cinematics at once, you get a trophy under the title: "Yes, there is also a story". In short, this time, the story is not what you buy the game for, because it is anything but interesting. The approach, on the other hand, is interesting, because the new path that the developer strikes creates a lot of diversity.

From hot to it

The game is divided into four categories and in each category there is a person inside. champion. It's up to you to do at least 70% of the races in each category and win before you can face the current champion. Have you defeated the four champions? Then comes the last episode of the Live XTRM series available and in which you face the four champions to crown you in absolute champion. It will take time, because to win at least 70% of the races in each category, you will soon be busy for a long time. That's because you can find subcategories in each category and they all have their own series of races.

You have the Street Race category in which you can practice disciplines such as street racing, drag racing, drift and hyper car. find. In the Offroad category you can find Rally Raid, Motocross and Cross Rally. In the Pro Racing category you will find disciplines such as motor boat, passenger car, air race and alpha GP. Finally, you have Freestyle and you will find acrobatic races, jetsprint and monster trucks. This results in a considerable number of races and one sub-category is much larger than the other. For example, the game has a lot of street racing, but the number of drag races is rather limited. Nevertheless, everything is good for the 100 races and you are just as happy

All these races are spread over the whole map and building followers according to your performances. you increase level. By progressing in level, you unlock step by step a new series of races in different disciplines and play more and more freely. The good thing about all these races is that you visit almost every corner of the United States and, more importantly, you will never be bored. The game serves so many types of races, so you always do something different. For example, one moment you are engaged in a drag race in Miami and a little later you get the craziest antics in the Nevada desert, then enter a hyper car and drive from New York to San Francisco [19659007] warm to it on the map to complete the various races and thanks to the many disciplines you will have plenty of time to enjoy the game. You will gradually collect different parts that you can use to improve the overall level of your vehicle. This is necessary for later races, as as you progress, opponents will have better equipment. Maybe you can also buy new (better) vehicles with in-game credits, but the available vehicles are relatively expensive so you have to manage your credits wisely. So it pays to continue to improve the vehicles you already have, so you can finish the majority of the races.

Free-roaming

One of the pleasing aspects of the original was that history gradually brought you everywhere. In The Crew 2, the story is no longer a guide, you simply choose via the folder where you want to shop or you use the overview in the menu. This also ensures that you jump from one place to another without actually having to travel there. The possibility is there, the rhythm benefits. On the other hand, a bit of big world potential remains unused and it's pretty bad somewhere. Especially when you realize that some parts of the United States are hardly used. For example, the six hyper car races (ranging from short to very long) are only west, north and east. All the south leaves intact the Ivory Tower

In any case, you will hardly find any races in Nevada – at least outside Las Vegas – or in Texas, while these are beautiful areas to offer. In fact, in the more than 30 hours I have spent, I have almost never been to New Orleans or Dallas. Of course, you can drive there, fly and in some cases also sail, but it is without any purpose. Free roaming will not get bored quickly, but it's a shame that the developer is no longer using the South for shopping. Crew 2 is full of races, but at the same time it could have been a lot more. The map is so big that there is a lot to do and it is unfortunate that not all places are used for a race.

You will always find "Skills". in different places and you can compare them with the & # 39; Tests of the original, only now they are adapted to many more disciplines. These are small challenges that you can select via the menu or take them automatically on the go. Remember to set a certain speed, follow very closely a certain flight path, cross as many buoys as possible and more than this type of extras. Where the original had more than 500 tests, in The Crew 2, the skills are less than half, so that's a step backwards. Honesty to say that the skills are a lot more fun to do, because here there is more variation. In addition, it works for your level, because each successful skill test brings new followers and sometimes improvements for your vehicles.

With Your Crew

The original did not have the title "The Crew" for nothing and it hit the opportunity to participate in the races with a team because you could train your own crew. This aspect was somehow related to the story of the game, but this is now little in The Crew 2. This is mainly due to the fact that the whole approach in this game is different, but this n & # 39; It removes nothing from the fact that the possibility of running in a team still exists. You can play every race with someone else and that, of course, is fun. For the course of the game there is no specific functional use, except that it is just fun to run with someone.

In some races, playing together can be useful, because by communicating well the AI can be foiled. This suggests that the AI works very smartly in races, but the opposite is true. The AI is sometimes very boring because they do not take into account you and other traffic. We've seen AI crash in the most stupid way and it's all the more boring as they beat so often that you regularly go out of the track, lose the steering wheel control and more. The result is either a catch-up race or a recovery, which depends on the duration of a race. More than once we started again, with a lot of frustration as a result

The AI is not much smarter compared to the original, and it can make a big difference to your nerves. The same goes for rubber bands, because even if you drive well, the AI is almost always close. If you then have a long fifteen minute trip or even a half hour late and you make a mistake in the last corner, you can shake it. That's when you drove a lot faster and better in the minutes before. The intention is to keep the races exciting, but because of the strange actions that AI takes, this often results in frustrating situations and it does not benefit the fun. Physics is also of a questionable level because accidents are made very simplistic and totally absurd.

This also brings us to another point. In one race you will find traffic on the road and not in the other race. However, it is so small that it could just as easily be omitted, since it only disrupts the traffic. In addition, the game is also incompatible with resetting your car. If you hit an oncoming vehicle, the game will reset you. Replace a checkpoint indicator, nothing bad to reset later. If you shock a car, then there is nothing wrong in 90% of the cases, but sometimes you will be rebooted again. That's no reason, because you could have continued the race after the disaster. After you have reset, you are sometimes very close to the rest and sometimes at a distance from them, which is also strange

Finally, there is one last aspect that is very boring. The navigation in The Crew 2 is very bad. You will drive from the checkpoint to the checkpoint and the main indication you have is a blue line on the mini-map. This is often not very visible and does not always indicate where you should go once you pass a checkpoint. It is only when you are past that you see more clearly what is the route to follow. At high speed, there is a chance that you miss an exit and drive badly. In addition, the checkpoints ahead are not on time, so you can anticipate quite awkwardly on the road ahead. With the shorter runs you often have on the route indicators, but they are not always clear, so you are very dependent on the mini-map. It is rare that we have so often participated in a racing game, simply because of the bad navigation and because we are not navigating continuously, especially when we are driving at high speed, to the mini-map. Hopefully Ivory Tower will add another form of navigation because the current system does not work.
