The first two Red Faction games on the PlayStation 2 were both well received. Players could appreciate the fact that you can shoot everything you've seen with the "Geo Mod" engine. This engine allowed to make complete tunnel systems in a level where it was not the main objective of the game. As a result, many players liked the franchise, but not for the reasons that the developer had found. The campaign was nice, but it was not made to the pleasure that provided the opportunity to break everything creatively. After the release of the second part, he was calm for a number of years around the franchise and just when everyone had declared Red Faction as well as dead and buried, Red Faction: Guerrilla was announced.

A personal anecdote is there place. The undersigned had a great time playing Red Faction in 2001, mainly because the Geo Mod engine provided so much additional entertainment. When the Red Faction: Guerrilla demo was made available on the PlayStation Network, I did not have to think twice before downloading it. When I started, I immediately noticed that the graphics looked boring and boring – my PlayStation 3 could be much better! The gameplay was also slow and I quickly concluded that this title was not made for me. I mumbled to myself "what a mess" and suggested I skip the demo again from my PS3.

That did not happen then, so the game stayed on my hard drive. A few days later, I gave a second chance to the demo of the boredom and decided to completely ignore the story to make everything small and small with the hammer you have immediately available at departure. Everything, but then everything sank under the hammering of my mighty hammer. Total destruction, explosions, violence – it was fantastic. I was a god, a superhero who could renovate the surface of Mars. How could I have been so horribly bad in a game? I pedaled up to the store and decided to give my money to THQ. Partly as a regret, but mostly because I could not have caused enough destruction in the demo.

Red Faction: Guerrilla was one of those games that unexpectedly hit you and your undivided pays attention to when you spent some time there. Sometimes a game or franchise just needs a second chance. The game was a relatively modest success, but just like a generation ago, THQ did not understand why the players liked Red Faction: Guerrilla. Red Faction: Armageddon seemed better at all levels, but reduced the possibility of destruction because the game used mostly linear levels. It was not as fun as the first part and the players felt that it was good and left the game on the left. The result has been that the game has collapsed horribly and THQ has been saddled with a cost of over $ 30 million. That made the franchise a slightly smeared PE and ultimately helped close THQ in January 2013. RIP Red Faction – thanks for the memories.

Almost 10 years …

Nordic Games bought THQ and became THQ Nordic. THQ Nordic reviewed all the IPs purchased and apparently acknowledged that Armageddon was a mistake and Red Faction: Guerrilla was the only real franchise game that won a remaster. Meanwhile, the technology of course has not stopped and, therefore, the Red Faction: Guerrilla Remaster has a number of improvements – mainly graphics -. For example, the textures were approached to be beautiful in 4K. Do you have a PS4 Pro? Then you can sow death and destruction in 4K. The lighting is improved as well as the rendering of the shadows and the game is naturally very smooth.

But do not make ourselves too wise; it's still this game of 2009. Nothing has changed in terms of content and this unfortunately means that some aspects are now out of date, the game's mission structure is a good example. The menus are functional and you get used to it, but it could have been a little more efficient with the DualShock 4 controller in mind. The animations and environments have not been improved or adjusted, making Mars pretty empty in 2018. This is not a remake, but adding a number of additional buildings to blow up would have been a good option, for example. The PlayStation 4 is after all capable of much more than this game.

… but still great!

Are these criticisms bad? No, not at all, as long as you realize that it's a remaster and not a remake. THQ Nordic, with the release of this remaster, admits that people finally understand why the franchise deserves a second chance. The attraction of Red Faction: Guerrilla is mainly in the ability to demolish virtually anything you see. And the best thing is that Red Faction: Guerrilla even after 9 years on this front is always fantastic. The way the buildings collapse realistically when you take the last pillar underneath and when the debris also crush the enemy troops, really kicks you.
