Björn Kuipers did not receive a FIFA semi-final at the world championships in Russia.
The World Football Association nominated Andrés Cunha (Uruguay) for France – Belgium on Tuesday night, while Cüneyt Çakir (Turkey) will whistle Croatia – England one day later. Kuipers still seems eligible for next Sunday's final. Presumably Argentine Néstor Pitana and Iranian Alireza Faghani are the other candidates.
Björn Kuipers has whistled this tournament four times so far. In the group stage, he was in charge of Egypt – Uruguay (0-1) and Brazil – Costa Rica (2-0). Then Spain – Russia (1-1, 4-5 after penalties) in the round of 16 and Sweden – England (0-2) in the quarterfinals.
Four years ago, Kuipers participated for the first time in the World Cup. In Brazil he then whistled three games and he was one of the favorites for the final. Due to the good performance of the Dutch national team, however, this climax has passed.
