Through the peace agreement that the FARC reached with the government at the end of 2016, they participated in the elections for the first time as a political party last March. With 0.3% of the votes, they were the big losers.

Nevertheless, ten members of the FARC sit in parliament because in the peace agreement it was agreed that until 2026, ten seats will be reserved for Congress for the party. The current term ran until 2022.

Two of the members were not present at the ceremony on Friday. One of them is in the United States a punishment. The other eight promised to work for human rights, democracy and peace.

Refused

FARC leader Ivan Marquez refused to sit in the Senate last week. He did it after another member, Jesus Santrich, was arrested. According to Marquez, the peace agreement was violated by the government.

Santrich was arrested because he was sentenced in the United States for drug trafficking. All crimes committed by FARC members for the peace agreement are handled by a special court. All that is not right after falls under ordinary law in Colombia.

Benkos Bioho of the FARC took the place of Marquez.
