HMD Global owns the Nokia license since 2016. This allows the company to release phones under the Nokia brand until 2024. To date, HMD has launched smartphones in the bottom segment and average ranges. With the arrival of the Nokia 8 Sirocco, the company is now also participating in the most expensive market, where the device rivals, for example, with the LG G7 ThinQ and the OnePlus 6.
The Nokia 8 Sirocco priced at 749 euros is the most expensive phone from HMD Global. This is the company's first device with an OLED display and works with Android One, which guarantees the user quickly new updates for the operating system and the security of the phone.
Design
The smartphone feels heavy and luxurious. The Nokia 8 Sirocco is mostly made of glass on both the front and the back. On the sides is chosen for a solid stainless steel case. The screen and the back bend over the edges towards each other, making the sides of the phone a little sharp. It makes the device look very slim.
It is striking that the Nokia 8 Sirocco has an aspect ratio of 16 out of 9, where competitors seem to opt for an elongated 18 x 9 design. The device also has visible edges at the top and bottom. There is therefore no notch available to stretch the screen up. The 5.5-inch OLED screen folds to the sides.
Unfortunately, these pieces have a dark discoloration, especially with a light background. The elbow also provides a reflective line, for example, lamps in the display.
The design of the phone can be called beautiful, and with the amount of glass, it is noticeable how many fingerprints and dust are visible on it. There is a fingerprint scanner under the dual camera at the back. It is hidden with a subtle ring in the case and reacts quickly.
No extras
The final is usually quite tight. Maybe a little too tight. The side buttons for volume and the activation and deactivation of the phone barely exceed and are very thin because of the edges, making them difficult to find immediately.
The phone is stripped of a headphone jack. This trend was initiated by Apple with the arrival of the iPhone 7. With this, the company has encountered a lot of resistance, but many phone manufacturers have followed the example. You are obliged to use the supplied adapter or use a Bluetooth headset or a wired alternative with a USB-C connection. The choice of HMD will be a loss for people who listen with wired headphones because the adapter is not the best solution.
In addition, there is no possibility to extend the storage space, although the device has 128 GB of memory.
Cameras
On the Nokia 8 Sirocco, there are two camera lenses: one for a wider view and one for a double zoom. In addition to a standard camera mode, there is also a Pro mode. This gives users more control over their photos and they can adjust the white balance and ISO values by swiping the screen.
The photos you take with your phone are often good but not spectacular. The camera has a few more problems in the dark. The photos are then stripped of most of the noise by the software, so the images are sometimes too smooth.
We also had a lot of arguments with the function 'Live Bokeh'. This ensures that you take pictures that show the subject much sharper than the background. Then it is possible to adjust the sharpness. After taking the picture, however, it was often impossible to open the image directly via the preview at the bottom right. In addition, the photo did not appear in the application Photos, the picture was completely gone. If the function worked, the cuts would not always be correct.
There is a 5 megapixel camera at the front. This gives reasonable pictures, but for selfies you expect something better from a 749 euros phone.
Android One
Like other new Nokia devices, the Sirocco 8 is also provided. from Android One. The advantage is that the phone always receives the latest updates for the Android operating system and security updates.
The Nokia 8 Sirocco also offers a simplified version of the operating system. This is a relief because the phone is not stuffed. This version of Android is the variant of Android that the Google maker had in mind. Many Android phones use their own skin, with many apps pre-installed by the manufacturer. This takes up a lot of space and often involves applications that you hardly use.
This phone contains only one Nokia application, which serves as support. In addition, the device is equipped with various Google applications, such as Gmail, YouTube and Photos. There is not a separate gallery application in which photos are taken.
Specifications
The Nokia 8 Sirocco has 6 GB of memory. The phone uses a Snapdragon 835 chip from last year. As a result, the phone is slightly less powerful than for example the OnePlus 6 and the LG G7 ThinQ, which have a newer Snapdragon chip.
In general, the phone works without delays or snags. However, the screen sometimes did not recognize the fingertips. We were faced with this kind of rather frustrating touching.
The phone has a battery of 3260 mAh. With normal use, you can spend the day without problems. After a day of normal use, we still had about 20%
The device supports a fast charge but can also be recharged wirelessly on a dedicated Qi charger. For this, the device must be placed in a very specific place. It happened to us more than once that the Nokia was no longer working, so the battery was empty

Conclusion
With 8 Sirocco, Nokia is trying to put itself once again in the expensive segment as a brand of phone. The device works well and Android One is an excellent guarantee of support and quick update.
Still, not everyone will be seduced by its big screen thanks to the screen rate of 16 out of 9, already a little old-fashioned. The edges at the top and bottom also contribute to this. The fading in the curved edges of the screen is also a point of criticism, although it is particularly striking in the bright image.
Overall, the Nokia 8 Sirocco is a very solid device that does what it should, but for 749 euros we expect something more. It is smarter to wait until the phone goes down. It will probably not take long.
