Twelve dead in suicide bombing in Kabul

11 people died in a suicide bombing just outside the airport of Kabul, the Afghan capital. At least 48 people were injured in the incident according to Reuters. The explosion occurred when one of the vice presidents of Afghanistan, the Uzbek warlord Abdul Rashid Dostum, returned from exile. The politician remained unscathed.

After Dostum left the airport in an armored convoy, the bomb exploded. Among the victims are civilians and soldiers. Nobody has yet claimed responsibility for the attack. The Taliban and the Islamic State are active in Kabul and have been attacking there.

Sexual Abuse and Torture

Dostum, who left the country in 2017, was, according to a government spokesman, sufficiently recovered from medical intervention in Turkey and could return to work. Dostum left the country after the Afghan prosecutor's office opened an investigation into his supporters. They allegedly tortured and sexually abused a political rival of Dostum. We do not know if he is still being sued.

Dostum was also charged with war crimes after the fall of the Taliban in 2001. Dostum was in Afghanistan's first government after falling under the secretary of defense under President Karzai and special advisor for the military affairs. Since 2014, he is the Senior Vice President; Afghanistan has a presidential system with two vice presidents. Sarwar Danish is the second.
