Chris Peterson, director of engineering program at Mozilla, complains on Twitter about the slow loading of YouTube on all popular browsers, with the exception of Chrome. The Google browser would be five times faster. This would have been the case since the design update of August 2017.
The tests that Peterson wrote on Twitter were also copied by The Verge, which she also put online . Even when the delay between two Go clicks is removed, Edge is indeed significantly slower than Chrome.
Peterson states that it is the use of the Javascript Polymer 1.0 library, which at the same time started with the great update last year. Polymer 1.0 uses the Shadow DOM v0-api which is only supported by Google Chrome. However, the problem is not with other browsers, since v0 of the API is already obsolete. Versions 2.0 and 3.0 of the Polymer Library contain the new Shadow DOM v1-api, making it easy to transfer YouTube to Google.
An alternative in the meantime would be to give users of browsers other than Chrome the old design of YouTube. This is possible to date with the help of add-ons and user scripts. This is already the norm for Internet Explorer 11. "They can also choose to do this for Firefox and Edge," says Peterson.
This is not the first time Google products have been running better or on their own platforms. . According to The Verge on Edge in the past, among others, Google Meet, Allo, YouTube TV and Google Earth blocked. Firefox would have been Meet, Earth and YouTube TV.
Worldwide, according to Alexa.com, YouTube is the second largest website in the world. The number one is Google.com.
