From July 27 to January 13, 2019, the Van Gogh Museum presents Van Gogh's dreams. A journey in his mind ", a convincing narrative installation on the emotional life of Vincent van Gogh
With light, color and sound, a sensory experience is created on the turbulent period of Van Gogh in Arles, in the south from France. This is the first time that the museum tells the story of Van Gogh without showing works of art. Axel Rüger (director of the Van Gogh Museum): "By blending storytelling with aesthetics, technology and craftsmanship, Van Gogh's inspiration becomes tangible and accessible to a wider audience." Van Gogh's dreams is a narrative installation that takes the visitor to Van Gogh's stay in Arles (1888-1889), a defining moment for Van Gogh as an artist and person. Van Gogh left Paris for the city of the south of France to realize his dream. He wanted to create a new art full of light and color, and establish a community of like-minded artists.
The story of this turbulent period is told in five different spaces, through which the visitor can walk. This experience is based on the many letters that Van Gogh wrote to his brother Theo. The letters show that life in Arles was a touching roller coaster for Van Gogh. Van Gogh's dreams plunge visitors into an emotional journey full of tragic losses and exceptional beauty.
International Design Agency
Van Gogh dreams tells the story of Van Gogh without showing his works, in addition to a visit to the permanent collection his paintings are central. The museum collaborates with the international design agency Tellart for this installation. Glasblazerij Van Tetterode in Amsterdam has produced 900 unique glass flowers, inspired by Van Gogh's famous sunflowers. The simple, abstract scenography with light, color and sound brings the visitor closer to Van Gogh's emotion.
Tellart was awarded the National Design Award by Cooper Hewitt, the Smithsonian Design Museum (New York) the Science Museum (London), the Victoria and Albert Museum (London), the Detroit Institute of Arts (Detroit), the Museum of tomorrow (Rio de Janeiro) and the Museum of the future (Dubai)
