BUDAPEST – Mercedes driver Lewis Hamilton has seized pole position for the Hungarian Grand Prix on a wet Hungaroring. The Brit has plunged at the very last moment under the hood of his team-mate Bottas while Kimi Raikkonen took third place in his red Ferrari. Candidate Sebastian Vettel, who was fastest in two of the three qualifying heats, finally had to settle for fourth place, while Max Verstappen was unfortunately disappointed for the seventh time.

The twelfth qualification of 2018 began on the 4.3-kilometer circuit with a drying track. This forced the riders to start the first 18-minute qualifying session on intermediate tires. While Max was the last to send his Red Bull on the track, several drivers have already been warned by their teams that there was more rain coming. Still, the slicks were mounted ten minutes from the end, and in the end Sebastian Vettel was the fastest with a 1.16.6. The Red Bull rider Daniel Ricciardo almost fell off the boat because he was the only one in the field with softs instead of ultra soft, but eventually the Austral has just enough temperature in his rubber Pirelli to finish the twelfth time put.

The second qualifying session started, leaving everyone on the ultra tires, with the exception of Vettel. The quadruple German world champion was the only one to have assembled the middlemen and this turned out to be the only good choice. While one after the other in the last sector of employment flew due to the rain starting again, Vettel recorded a 1.28.6. Although everyone was passing in the inter after the first lap and some later to the rain tires, conditions got so much worse that Vettel's weather remained the fastest.

The last qualifying round of twelve minutes was completely in the rain. This forced everyone to leave the stands on the blue rain tires. Verstappen sent his Red Bull to second place and took Brendon Hartley in the warm-up lap to run his first round without spraying. Unfortunately, that did not really help and the Limburger finished Saturday in seventh place. The battle for the pole came back between the teams of Ferrari and Mercedes and in the end it was both Silberpfeile who claimed all the first row.
