At a small event in China, Samsung introduced a number of screen related innovations. There is a good chance that at least some of them will end up in the Galaxy S10 in 2019.
features. Yesterday, we explained a patent that explains a possible fingerprint sensor under the screen of the future Galaxy S10. Such a sensor is being shortened by insiders to FoD – Fingerprint on Display. It's also one of the new features that Samsung has presented to a small number of customers as part of a "Samsung OLED Forum" at a hotel in Shenzhen. On the menu, there were three other abbreviations: UPS, SoD and HoD.
Under the panel sensor
If you want to enlarge the screen of a smartphone, you need to place the necessary sensors somewhere. Last year, Apple chose the controversial notch, which Samsung has managed to avoid so far. In fact, South Koreans now seem to have a better solution: the under-panel sensor (UPS). These are sensors and cameras placed under the display in one way or another. We do not yet know exactly how Samsung does it, but that would be the way to give the Galaxy S10 a giant screen without ugly notches.
Sound on Display
If you want a screen covering the entire front of your smartphone filling is another annoying element. To call – what some still seem to do with their smartphone – you also need a speaker. Samsung introduced Sound on Display (SoD), which turns some parts of the screen into a speaker. Earlier this year, SoD was already exposed to the 2018 Display Week:
Haptic on Display
The Haptic on Display (HoD) technology is less obvious. The illustrated slide is called "Game Button on Screen" and ultimately recalls primarily the pressure sensitive yet virtual shortcut key of devices such as the Galaxy S8 and the S9. The central idea – the haptic feedback when you touch the screen – is already treated there. Whatever the case may be, HoD may still be something different / new / extended.
What all this means for the Galaxy S10, for the moment, is just guessing. In any case, it seems likely that Samsung is using an FPS and a UPS for the device. And the SoD technology is well advanced and perhaps ready for the real work.
The features presented clearly show that Samsung can bring real innovations. If a few of them end up in the Galaxy S10, this will be one of the most interesting smartphones of 2019. For now, there is not much left to wait. Good weekend!
