It seems that five of the sixteen Dead Sea Scrolls at the Bible Museum in Washington are fake. Research shows that the roles are "false moderns". They were immediately removed from the collection.
The museum was opened last year and paid for by rich evangelicals. The sixteen manuscripts of the Dead Sea were the highlight of the museum.
A team of German scientists examined the roles. Many experts had previously questioned the authenticity of the roles. Researchers used 3D microscopes, X-rays, and ink analysis.
The Dead Sea Scrolls were discovered between 1947 and 1956 in eleven caves near Qumran, in the West Bank. There are more than 900 documents, including more than 200 manuscripts from the Hebrew Bible and the Old Testament.
Hidden in Caves
The manuscripts date back to about 250 BC. At 50 AD. They are probably hidden in the caves around 68 AD.
In recent years, parts of the roles, real or fake, are often offered for sale. Experts worry about the commercial exploitation of artifacts.
Despite the disappointing results of the research, the museum remains positive. "We were hoping for different results, but it's an opportunity to show the public how important it is to verify the authenticity of rare biblical artifacts," says Jeffrey Kloha, of the museum's .
