The iPhone XR is the cheapest of the three new iPhones. The XR costs 300 euros less than the iPhone XS.

The iPhone XR's screen is once again improved compared to older iPhones equipped with an LCD, but the logical contrast and color reproduction remain slightly lower than those of the XS and XS Max. The advantage of OLED is that pixels can be turned off to show deep black values, which allows much higher contrast. The colors of the OLED screens are also more complete.
One can also find differences in the resolution. The XR has a resolution of 1792 by 828 pixels, which equates to 326 pixels per inch. The phone does not get a Full HD (1920 x 1080) image, which is expected in 2018 for a superior phone. The number of pixels per inch is also lagging behind the XS and XS Max, both of which offer a resolution of 458 pixels per inch, showing sharper images.
In use, you notice few of these differences. The image of the iPhone XR is usually clear and crisp. The differences actually only occur when the device is placed next to an iPhone X, XS or XS Max.
When testing the phone, not all apps have been adapted to the screen by the developers yet. As a result, the letters are sometimes very little stretched, resulting in discoloration. Developers will probably quickly adapt their applications to the new screen format.
On the iPhone XR, Apple is saying goodbye to 3D Touch, a technique that Apple has been using for years in its phones. This allows the phone to feel how strongly you are pressing for specific actions. The feature is still available on the iPhone XS and XS Max.
The XR solves this problem with Haptic Touch. This means everything is possible with 3D Touch, but users need to keep their finger on the screen longer instead of pressing harder. Fervent iPhone users must get used to, for example when opening the camera from the lock screen.

Simple camera with portrait mode
On the back, the iPhone XR has a 12 megapixel camera, with the same lens as the standard camera of the IPhone XS. It lacks the telephoto lens to zoom twice optically in this model.

A big loss is not, however, because we are not always happy with the result of this effect. In general, the portrait picture works well and the subject is well cut, even if the haircut is slightly blurred at the edges.
The camera on the back also works with normal photos. With the addition of Smart HDR, the iPhone ensures that certain parts of the photos are always well lit. It works well with many differences in contrast in the image, which means that very light and very dark parts are clearly visible.
The iPhone XR has a 7-megapixel camera in the slot. It is assisted by sensors, so that the face of the user can be scanned in 3D. This benefits the portrait mode and ensures that unlocking the phone always works quickly and accurately.
A new format and bright colors
The appearance is pretty good on the iPhone XR on the iPhone XS and the iPhone XS Max. This time, all new iPhones have the same design, with a screen that fills almost the entire front. In addition, the iPhone XR has a notch at the top of the screen.
The edges of the XR are a bit thicker because of the LCD screen. This display is less flexible than the OLED, so the screen can not bend around the edges, as it does on the XS and XS Max. The finish is high quality, but next to the other two new iPhones, the sound is a little stronger.
The size of the iPhone XR also differs. The screen measures 6.1 inches. This makes the device slightly larger and wider than the iPhone XS (5.8 inches), but smaller than the XS Max (6.5 inches). The format makes us more satisfied than the XS Max, which is practically unusable with one hand.
The iPhone XR is also distinguished by its available colors. The device is available in six colors on the market: red, yellow, white, orange / pink (coral), black and blue. This is the first time since the iPhone 5C that Apple offers so many different colors. Our red phone attracted the eye of the editors and could count on positive feedback: with the iPhone XR, the company shows that playful colors fit perfectly to high quality phones.

The performance is not fading for iPhone XS
The iPhone XR works quickly and smoothly, as you can expect today. The device is equipped with the new A12 Bionic chip, which is also in the iPhone XS and XS Max. In this regard, the device can easily go with the top.
The neuron engine is part of the chip. For example, Apple uses Machine Learning to edit photos and portrait mode of the camera. In addition, augmented reality applications need to work faster and better than previous iPhone. This difference is hardly noticeable when it is used, but it is also because the old iPhones were processing images quickly.
The iPhone XR will eventually support dualsim, which allows you to use two phone numbers and subscriptions in one phone. One of the two SIM cards must then be a digital SIM card, the other an eSIM. A useful addition, even if it can not be used in the Netherlands. ESIM is not currently offered by any Dutch supplier.
Regarding the battery, the iPhone XR will last a day. During our daily use tests, where we visited some social media, opened e-mails, listened to podcasts and watched Netflix on the train, we had about 20 to 30% charges at the end of the day. It is also nice to be able to wirelessly charge the iPhone XR.
Conclusion
The iPhone XR is the cheapest of the three new iPhones. Still, you can expect a high quality device at 859 euros with the latest chip and the latest design from Apple. The colors will also please many people.
With the XR, Apple is for people who want to use a powerful iPhone with a big screen, but do not necessarily need an OLED screen or a dual camera.
The difference of 300 euros with the cheapest iPhone XS is pretty, especially considering the similarities between the devices. This makes it at least an important and innovative step since an iPhone 7 or 8. The phone responds to some points of the expensive version, but the user experience is ultimately not very different and this makes the XR very attractive.
