The auction of a painting done with the help of a computer algorithm reported a first prize.
A chart made by Artificial Intelligence (AI) was auctioned at Christie's for $ 432,500 yesterday. The value of "Portrait of Edmond de Belamy", made by the French collective Avoid, was estimated at $ 7,000 to $ 10,000. The auction, in which five people clashed, lasted seven minutes. Who bought the artwork is not known.
This is a painting that seems to date from the 18th century but was made in Paris earlier this year with the help of a computer algorithm. It was obvious that a computer digitized 15,000 classic portraits from the 14th to the 20th century. The computer analyzed the style and characteristics of the images and deduced from these data a painting method, and then used them to build a portrait.
The work, signed from a mathematical formula down right, is part of a series of eleven portraits. Obvious includes an economist and two technicians. They designed a noble family of eleven Belamy, of which Edmond is the youngest.
