In Oldenburg, Germany, a former nurse was sentenced for the death of 100 patients. Niels Högel, 41, confessed to injecting patients with heart medicine, after which he tried to bring him back to life. However, it has not always worked.

Högel, known until now, had been involved in 27 deaths. He simply could not remember all these incidents, only 6 were sentenced. This means that a total of 106 deaths are now attributable to him. The prosecutor suspects Högel of more than two hundred deaths.

Reopening of the case

Högel confessed during the first day of his new trial. "It's true what you say," he answered the prosecutor's question. "There are about a hundred dead, but nothing more."

The prosecutor argued during the trial that it was a game for the former nurse. He would have liked to perform heroic acts out of boredom. His goal was for his colleagues to see him as a hero and an excellent nurse.

In 2005, Högel was arrested while injecting a cardiac drug to a patient who did not need it. He was sentenced to 7 years in prison at the time. The close relatives ensured that the case was reopened in 2014.

The number is probably higher

In 2008 and 2015, Högel was sentenced to the death of thirty patients. The prosecution has searched and investigated the remains of 130 patients. According to No. the ex-nurse was sentenced to life sentence for two murders, two assassination attempts and serious bodily injury

. The data from the Oldenburg Clinic showed that a remarkable number of people died, at the time when Högel was at work. Despite everything, he had a good evaluation when he changed jobs and started working in Delmenhorst. Although there have been discussions, no investigation has been conducted.

The case is one of the biggest murders in German history. In all likelihood, the number of deaths at Högel is much higher. However, no further research is possible as these patients were incinerated.
