Hargrove won two Grammy Awards. The first that he had in 1998, when his album Habana was released in 1997, was named Best Latin Jazz Show. Five years later, Hargrove won the awards again. Hijj won the award for best instrumental jazz album with his record Itinéraire in Music (2002).

Hargrove's latest album can be heard alongside jazz giants Michael Brecker and Herbie Hancock. The trumpet player, who released his first album in 1990, has also contributed to the work of many famous artists, including Angelo, Erykah Badu and John Mayer. Hargrove also had his own group, The RH Factor.

Hargrove was a regular guest at the North Sea Jazz Festival. He made his first appearance at the age of seventeen, and then returned there almost every year.
