Two buildings in the heart of the French city of Marseille collapsed on Monday. More than forty rescuers and eighteen vehicles came to the site to search for victims. Rescuers took a deadly victim under the rubble. Five to eight people are still missing.
Firefighters and police continue to clean rubble on site. According to the French Minister of the Interior, "5 to 8 victims" were buried under the debris.
According to the French Minister of the Interior, Christophe Castaner, who arrived on the scene Monday night, eight people were reported to be in the buildings. Perhaps two passers-by were also buried. Castaner said "not optimistic about the situation".
The minister spoke of a "tragedy" and also called on residents who would find themselves elsewhere to report as soon as possible. "Because as long as doubt reigns, we will continue to search."
Castaner and his colleague Julien Denormandie, responsible for the city and housing, met Monday night with the prefect and the emergency services in Marseille. They make a new balance Tuesday morning at 8 o'clock.
Do not go to school
It is still unclear why the two four- and five-storey buildings of the famous Rue d'Aubagne, near the old port of Marseille, have Is suddenly collapsed. One of the houses was declared uninhabitable by the local government and the collapse is probably the result of a gas explosion.
Two people were slightly injured in the other inhabited house.
It seems that among the missing persons is a woman who is not going to pick up her daughter at school and another "who has never been out of her home"
Firefighters have a third building Monday evening badly damaged,
