The toll of the victims of the collapse of two buildings in the French city of Marseille was raised to five on Wednesday. Rescuers found the body of a man in the morning
The buildings of central Marseille collapsed Monday morning, after which part of a nearby building was dismantled as a precaution. It is only the next morning that the first fatal victim was removed from the rubble.
Among the five victims are three men and two women. Their identity is not yet known, reports Le Monde . According to the French newspaper, eight people could still be among the collapsed buildings. The debris would have accumulated up to a height of 15 meters.
The head of the local fire brigade says that the search for victims will continue. "We are continuing our work in the hope of finding survivors," he told reporters.
Earlier this week, research was hampered by heavy rainfall. Wednesday it will probably rain again. Rescuers on site also said buildings in the area had been destabilized by the collapse of the two buildings.
Investigation into the cause of the collapse of buildings
The French authorities are investigating the cause of the disaster. According to residents, the buildings in question had expired and needed to be renovated.
As a precaution, 105 residents of the neighborhood were evacuated. On Tuesday afternoon, they were allowed to go home in small groups to focus on their personal pursuits.
