The prosecution service in Ecuador will sue former president Rafael Correa for his missing kidnapping. Judge Daniella Camacho said that there was sufficient evidence that Correa was the brains behind an attempt to kidnap opposition politician Fernando Balda in 2012. He may be sentenced to seven years of prison for that.
Balda was a member of the Constituent Assembly and sentenced to two years in prison for insulting the Correa government. After his conviction, Balda fled to neighboring Colombia.
Secret Service
In Bogota, the Colombian capital, an attempt at kidnapping eventually failed. The kidnappers were arrested and reported acting on behalf of the Ecuadorian secret service. They had to bring Balda back to Ecuador. Shortly after the failed abduction, Balda was extradited to Ecuador, where he served his prison term.
Rafael Correa was President of Ecuador from 2007 to 2017. He now lives in Belgium, the country of origin of his wife.
