Samsung makes it easy to use large smartphones

At its developer conference, Samsung presented not only a taste of its folding phone on Wednesday night, but also a new interface for classic smartphones. The new single user interface divides the phones screen into two parts: all controls are at the bottom of the screen, the viewing area is at the top.

You simply need to be able to reach all the keys with your thumb, with many great recent smartphones it is no longer possible. The new interface is implemented in all standard Samsung applications from the wake-up screen to messages and photos. In addition, the interface between all these applications is aligned, with more rounded buttons and more color. A dark mode is also added.

The creators of applications have to choose

The disadvantage is an Android skin, which Samsung puts on top of Android 9 Pie. It is up to the developers of apps to choose a Samsung UI at a later time, or for the standard look that Google has designed for Android 9. Google itself places many buttons at the top of the screen. A user interface is initially deployed on the Galaxy S9, S9 Plus and Note 9 from January 2019 as part of Samsung's update for Android 9. A beta version will be available later this year.

Samsung also goes to the notch

Samsung also showed during his lecture that he was finally turning to the screen notch, the so-called notch. The notch was popularized by the iPhone X, after which almost all Android phone manufacturers have followed their own device with "notch", with the exception of Samsung.

Now, Samsung has introduced four new types of screen, including three with notches. This concerns the U, V and O Infinity displays. The letters refer to the shape of the screen notch; the U and the V have a notch in this form, at the very top of the screen. The Infinity O offers a screen with a round opening in the top corner in front of the camera.

The letterless Infinity screen should be completely free of nicks and offer a device with a screen without borders around the entire screen before. Samsung has not gone further in this design, probably because this version will not be there soon. Businesses still need to understand how to build sensors and cameras in an invisible way on the screen. The same goes for Apple, last year, who made fun of the iPhone X.
