The conflict over Sunday shopping in the Paddepoel shopping center in Groningen is over. Traders and homeowners' associations have been opposing for years on mandatory opening on Sunday but have entered into new agreements.
The dispute has been going on since 2014. The VVE wanted all retailers at the mall to participate in the monthly shopping Sunday. This would create clarity for the consumer. Some traders did not care to open on Sundays because it would not be profitable. They kept the doors closed and were fined.
For some entrepreneurs, the fines amounted to several tens of thousands of euros. For example, a bike shop, which was seized in March, is liable to a fine of 60,000 euros. Traders have gone to court with more or less success in evading fines

The Groningen municipal policy also intervened in the conflict. City Council said that the desired expansion of the shopping center would not materialize as long as the conflict continued. Once again, traders sat around the table with the table.
