Mathieu van der Poel runs a number of classics next season. De Brabander does not know yet in which great cycling races he will appear at the start
"Gent-Wevelgem perhaps, some other classics, Paris-Roubaix could be between the two," said Van der Poel on television program Peptalk by Ziggo Sport. "I do not know yet, I'm not a planner."
The European cyclo-cross champion has organized several smaller races on the road. For example, he won twice the French stage of the Boucles de la Mayenne. He also became Dutch champion on the road this year.
With his second place behind Matteo Trentin at the European Road Championships in August, Van der Poel, 23, showed that he could compete with the best drivers on the road. Wout van Aert, triple world cyclocross champion from Belgium, finished third in this race.
"Cyclocross is considered a national sport, but the level is very high," said Hoogerheide's rider. "You can see that the best cyclists can also compete in other disciplines, and Wout and I will be two and three in the road race at the European Championships, which says enough." also has the ambition to participate in the Tour de France in the future. "I would like to do the Tour someday," he said. "But I do not want to do everything fast because it's okay now, I want to keep it for a while."
Last Sunday, he had his ninth cyclocross victory of the season at Superprestige de la Gavere in Belgium. He wants to continue to combine cyclocross, mountain bike and road cycling in the years to come.
"Variety remains the best," says Van der Poel. "I would not compete for a whole year, mountain bike or road, I like to combine."
He focuses first on the 2020 Olympics in Tokyo. "My main focus for the moment is the Olympics on mountain biking. After the Games, I'm 25 years old and I could basically ride on the road for another ten years."
