The mayor and municipal councilors of the city of Arnhem now wish to deduct an additional 7.5 million for the renovation of the Arnhem Museum. A total of 23 million is available, including 500,000 euros from the province.
The museum is closed for a year in anticipation of the works, because no contractor could be found who would have wanted to do the work with the money available.
As part of the budget increase, the renovation and extension of the museum can be carried out and remain very durable, the Commission hopes. He wishes the museum stays on the current location of Utrechtseweg, a little west of the city center on the road that leads to Oosterbeek.
The view from the museum on the Rhine is famous. The move to the city center has been studied, but it costs more, takes more time and probably does not generate any additional interest. This option no longer has any chance.
The Arnhem Museum would initially remain closed for two years for renovations, according to the plans of Benthem Crouwel Architects. The building, a gentlemen's club dating from 1873 with two extensions later, is not enough.
The museum, home to many realists, attracts about 60,000 visitors a year.
