Revised: 11-11: Memories recounted – There are enough games on the theme of the Second World War. The first world war did not attract the same attention from the developers and certainly not with regard to the titles for consoles. The last one was Battlefield 1 from DICE. It was a first person shooter and it's focused mainly on violence. 11-11: Memories Recold, however, takes a completely different approach and emphasizes the influence of a war on people and adds the opportunity to influence history. The goal is for the player to fully understand how a war can influence people and what the consequences are for their actions.
Two Sides
Canadian Harry. The two gentlemen join the army for various reasons. Kurt reported that his son – who is also part of the army – and his battalion were lost and that he wants to find him himself. Harry is a photographer who wants to conquer the heart of a woman, but she only has eyes for men in military uniform. To impress, he enters the army to take pictures there. The two men are therefore one in front of each other on the battlefield, allowing you to see the war on both sides. However, fate always manages to make strange jumps, so you are faced with unexpected situations and the question is how you react.
Free as a bird
As you have already read in the introduction, 11-11: Memories Retold loves history very much. In many games, we find that this means that you have little control over the main characters and that you only have to make choices during certain actions or dialogues. However, in this game you have full control of your character. You end up in isolated areas that are not big, but where you can walk freely. You have some simple tasks to do and you can talk to the different people you meet. So, in terms of play, it's not difficult. As there are two main players, you can also switch between them and if you play the role of Harry, you can also take pictures of the environment. Kurt occasionally sends letters home and the text can be influenced, and the home front reacts to what you write. instead of being an essential part. The fact that all you have to do is a low threshold is justifiable and fits perfectly into the game because it ensures that the story will not stop unnecessarily. The first chapter of 11-11: Memories Reed is not at all fascinating. This is because the story starts very slowly and you have to do very simple things and not very nice. Some scenes are too spread out and some parts are very much like padding. So, you really have to hit the first chapter. It is unfortunate that the first chapter is not well written because there are only two chapters left. So one third of the game is free.
But then …
Fortunately, things are better, even better. After the first chapter, the game opens up a lot more and the game is also deepened. At the same time, the story becomes much more interesting and the game takes a lot of speed. You also get a lot more sympathy with the characters and that only benefits the game. There are things you do not see coming and you are completely swallowed up by the story. It is therefore a pity that the first chapter is not as good as the last two, because it made the total experience absolutely better. 11-11: Overall, Memories Retold is very good, but it is now possible that players give up their game earlier than expected because the game shows only its best side. In addition to delaying the game, there are several other things that interfere with the experience and one of them is the graphic part.
Nice ugly?
Because of the power of current disk consoles. many developers choose to give their games as realistic graphics as possible. It is therefore strongly recommended to choose a completely different style. 11-11: Memories Retold is a title that makes the difference. The use is made of a style similar to watercolor, which is constantly in motion. It's very original, but it does not always work well. Some scenes are really breathtaking because of the style chosen, but there are also many times the result is ugly pictures. The graphics are way too coarse and that sounds like a game for the original PlayStation, instead of a unique visual style for the PlayStation 4.
This is not correct
What's also bothering is that Kurt is a German who speaks English fluently when he comments on the story . During the game, however, he speaks German and this even shows that he does not understand English at all, let alone what he speaks. The fact that everyone in the game speaks their own language naturally creates an authentic feeling, but this is completely ruined by the fact that the German main character suddenly speaks English while telling the story. Kurt's wife also writes letters to her husband in English. Why this is done is a big point of questioning. It must be said that the voice of the two main characters is very good.
A block around
The last thing that does not positively influence the game is the fact that collectibles can be found. It's good that they provide basic information, but occasionally, they hinder the story. For example, you must provide ammunition to someone at some point because you have found yourself in a big battle with the enemy. So he quickly needs ammunition, but at that time, there are also collectibles in places where you have to walk. This move is not consistent with the story that you have to supply ammunition to your fellow soldier. This is compensated a bit because you can play the game many times, because there are a lot of different purposes. With the replay value, so it's good in 11-11: Memories Retold.
