A Formula 1 race at Zandvoort or Assen in two years is one more step. The Formula One Management (FOM) would have placed the Dutch Grand Prix on the provisional calendar of 2020.
Several media reported in particular Telegraaf Tuesday. Zandvoort would prefer to go to Zandvoort, while the Assen circuit is considered a reinforcement if Zandvoort fails to secure the necessary funds.
Prince Bernhard van Oranje, owner of the Zandvoort circuit, said earlier this month that the coastal city would be preferred to the capital Drenthe in Assen. The FOM has not wanted to confirm that until now.
The tentative schedule for 2020 will normally be officially released in spring 2019. Formula 1 has recently confirmed that Vietnam can hold a Grand Prix in two years. It's a street race in the capital, Hanoi.
The last Grand Prix of Holland dates back to 1985
If Formula 1 finally landed in the Netherlands in 2020, it would be for the first time in 35 years. A race was held annually in Zandvoort between 1952 and 1985 – with the exception of four years.
After 1985, the organization no longer received a budget. Three-time world champion Niki Lauda could still be the last winner on Dutch soil.
The current Formula 1 season has ended Sunday with the Grand Prix of Abu Dhabi. Max Verstappen crossed the finish line at the Yas Marina circuit for the third time in a row and finished fourth in the World Championship standings.
The 2019 Formula 1 calendar includes 21 races. The first Grand Prix will be held in Melbourne, Australia, on March 17th and the season will end in Abu Dhabi on December 1st.
