From a debt to a ton of savings: "It did not seem like a huge comeback"

When Renée Lamboo sold her apartment, she ended up with a debt of 40,000 euros. She worked that way and had the taste. With her friend, she saved 100,000 euros in four years. "Saving does not make life less fun and less comfortable, it gives me freedom."
Renée Lamboo remembers well that she was with her husband at the mortgage advisor. The house they had in mind in the Flevopolder cost 265,000 euros. The advisor looked a lot at the two independent contractors, both working in the media, which he faced, when Lamboo said, "We saved an extra ton on our savings account."
In recent years the people who heard it were amazed. This mainly raised questions and comments: "How?", "Then you will never be able to eat outside?", "You will have to leave a lot" and "You certainly deserve a lot". "People can save a lot more than they think," says Lamboo, 33.
About her savings and lifestyle, she writes the book "An expensive house, never home". We want but do not do enough “/>

Save for home or old age? We want, but do too little
No pension, but brick
"Saving is not spending money," Lamboo says. "And it's a choice, although people do not always like to hear that." After the release of her first relationship, her apartment was under water and she ended up with a debt, she decided to attack it otherwise. "So, do not want a mansion in Amsterdam, but live consciously cheaper outside Randstad, where homes are still affordable." A choice then.
This made savings easier in the case of Lamboo than for an employee ("they can also save money"): she and her husband receive a gross income. They do not save for their pension, do not have a professional disability insurance, but put aside the money after deduction of the tax and the salary that they give themselves as entrepreneurs.
Their combined income is two to three times more modal. At fixed costs, Lamboo shows by email, they lose 2318 euros per month. This includes the mortgage (500 euros), the grocery store (450 euros), the housekeeper (300 euros), childcare expenses, cars, Internet, newspaper and charity (25 euros ).
Lower monthly charges
"We put this ton of savings in a house, so our monthly expenses have dropped significantly, so that a small portion of our pension is in brick form although we will see soon how we save. " . "If you are a freelancer for life, you have to put more than a ton aside.
And only AOW is not enough, Lamboo knows it." My dad comes from there and this is not not a lot, "she says, because their fixed costs were lower, they had to work less and leave more time for their families.
What helped to save fanatically over the four years: having a goal in head and note literally what was saved on a barometer. "This sounds difficult, but with every thousand euros we put a dash." What should you leave if such an amount wants to save? Holidays, weekends -end?
Do not Buy Blank Action
"We went on vacation, but not to 5000. Instead of eating three times a week, we went there twice a month." This helped that the two children were even smaller then. "We were going to do less in every case."
The savings realized were mainly in small editions. So, do not look for a roll of tape in the Action movie and come home with a bag full of things. No coffee at the station, make a shopping list and prepare your own meals instead of ordering. Or, as Lamboo writes in his book: "Are these bags containing pre-cut products in? Do you have a knife yourself?"
More time, more freedom
Lamboo has never had the feeling of giving up. "When we bought our house, I thought: wow, a floor is really ours." In addition to the ton of savings that have been put in the house, they still keep a reserve of 10,000 euros. Is not it a meager for two independent workers without disability insurance?
"We take this risk into account and we can also live on a salary." The word choice falls again. Lamboo knows enough couples who both work to be able to live in this beautiful house of Randstad. "As soon as people earn more, they also want more: we wanted more time, more freedom."
The Five Boards of Economics of Renée Lamboo:
1. Think in terms of possibilities, do not find yourself too pathetic
"That sounds bad, but if you think that we can only save because we are independent, people are wrong, really want it. "
2. Take a look at your income and especially your expenses
"Apart from your fixed costs, do not spend all your money on little things, like a coffee here and there."
3. Do not save what you have at the end of the month, but reserve a fixed amount at the beginning.
"You do not really miss the money and what you do not have, you can not spend it either." 19659013] 4. Store your savings in another bank
"It is now better to save money on your usual account. If you find it in another bank, you will not be able to hear easily. "
5. Hang a visual memory
"Because we launched our barometer every thousand euros, we became more fanatical and the savings achieved doubled."
