Condoms are freely available in France. Pharmacies will give them a prescription from the doctor, said Minister Buzyn of Health. She finds it necessary in the fight against HIV.
The measure will come into force on December 10th. From that moment on, men and women who want a condom can get a prescription from a doctor or midwife. The amount they have to pay at the pharmacy is covered by the insurance.
These are boxes of 6, 12 or 24 units of a condom: Eden. According to the ministry, scientists have determined that it was safe and that it was not expensive.
In France, 6,000 people contract HIV each year, which can change into AIDS. Young people in particular suffer from HIV, says Buzyn. They often use a condom when they have sex for the first time, but this is no longer the case.
