One protein (IFNalpha2a) acts against viruses and certain forms of cancer. The other (macrophage-CSF) stimulates the repair of damaged tissues, according to NU.nl . Through the modified chicken, the proteins are found in the egg. The animals themselves do not seem to suffer any harmful effects: "they lay their eggs normally". Unlike previous attempts to add protein to eggs or milk, this is the first time the method can be used at lower cost. Between 2011 and 2016, the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) published 62 new protein drugs in the United States and between September 2016 and December 2017, 27 new applications were licensed.
