Sixteen people were infected during a major legionella outbreak in Evergem, near Ghent, Belgium. One of them died since, reports the Belgian agency Zorg in Gezondheid on Monday.

The outbreak around Evergem in East Flanders began at the end of April, but the source of the infection does not seem to have been found yet. Legionella is a dangerous bacteria that can appear in drinking water systems.

Four patients were admitted to the hospital on weekends and from Monday to last month. The majority of patients come from Evergem, but some Ghent residents are also infected

A Care and Health agency spokesperson says the patient profile does not immediately mean contaminated tap water . The agency thinks rather of a cooling tower where water splashes can spread and settle in the open air.

Water samples are being analyzed in water towers in the Ghent Canal area, the area where the fatal victim lived.
