Meeting Centers
This volunteer work is organized in meeting centers for people with dementia and their caregivers. Among these meeting centers, 163 are located in the Netherlands and they are so successful that this Dutch approach attracts a lot of interest from foreigners: they have also been installed in Italy, Poland, England, in Spain and Australia.
Rose-Marie Dröes, professor is the driving force behind these meeting centers and has even received a royal award for this past year. Yet his work is not yet well known.
"No, this type of research is much less in the limelight than dementia research that focuses on drugs or cure," says Dröes. "But if you look at the effects of our work: meeting centers, volunteer work and telephone conversations with caregivers, we are much more successful than the 30-year-old drug research that cost billions, result. "
