Android P has screen support with notch up and down – Tablets and Phones – News

In Android P, Google adds official support for screens with a notch. A blog for developers shows that there is also support for two-step screens, up and down. More than two notches are not allowed

The Android developer blog states that Google imposes a number of requirements on smart phone manufacturers with regard to notches. One is that a screen can have a maximum of two notches and they must be up and down. A screen must not have more than two notches and they may not be on the sides. In addition, there can be only one notch on the short side.

That Android P received support for screens with a notch was already known by the announcement of the new operating system. The fact that there is also support for multiple notches is new information. It is not clear if there are manufacturers working on smartphones with two notches.

Up to now, only smartphones have come out with a notch, at the top of the screen. In Android 8, where such devices are running, there is officially no support for the notches, but manufacturers can make adjustments themselves to make it work properly. In theory, smartphone manufacturers can also make phones with more than two notches.
