A new Apple patent describes a method that allows Siri's speech assistant to answer many questions offline and to execute orders. For Apple product users, the experience should be fluid.
Once you are offline, the device itself can process a spoken command, according to the patent application. If you're online, Siri can always determine whether the attribution can be better handled through the cloud or on the device itself.
For example, some tasks, such as playing downloaded music, do not need to be processed in the cloud. But for example, playing the latest video from your favorite YouTube channel requires online processing. Siri would always make the best choice.
Apple chips with AI
The extended offline version of Siri will use more and more powerful Apple chips, equipped with special computing units for processing with artificial intelligence.
The patent application does not mean that it is already certain that the offline Siri will arrive in the short term. The next major update for iOS, iOS 13, is expected only in the course of 2019.
