The Berlin police, the German capital, on Sunday arrested 10 people suspected of abusing a 25-year-old Jewish Jew. It involves seven men and three women. This reports the AP news agency.

The 25-year-old man would have contacted the group because he had asked for a fire to light his cigarette. One of the men would have seen the chain with the victim's Star of David after which he would have made anti-Semitic remarks and would have kicked him. The man tried to run away but fell and was attacked by several people. The spectators intervened after which the police arrested the ten suspects. In the meantime, they were released in anticipation of the investigation of the incident. The suspects have both Syrian and German nationality.

Antisemitism

In Germany, anti-Semitism increases. The number of anti-Semitic offenses in Berlin last year doubled compared to 2013. In April, the president of the Central Jewish Council warned that Jews in major cities in Germany should monitor wearing a kippah in public. The reason was the mistreatment of a 21-year-old Israeli student who was attacked after going out with a kippah.
