The number of Dutch owners with arrears on their mortgages is decreasing. That's what the Krediet Registratie Office (BKR) reports Wednesday in its mortgage barometer. On October 1, nearly 80,000 borrowers had a past due payment of at least three months on their mortgage

which represents a decrease of more than 12% over last year. In October 2017, almost 91,000 people had a backlog of mortgages.

"Homeowners are improving, as evidenced by the number of borrowers having arrears of payment of their mortgage loan," writes Peter van den Bosch, director of BKR. ] The number of people with arrears on their mortgages reached a low point in 2015. At that time, more than 113,000 borrowers had a backlog of mortgage repayments and the number has steadily declined since then.

During the last quarter, 1,750 new borrowers had a payment arrears of at least three months, compared to nearly 2,100 people a quarter before.
