Desi Bouterse, the main suspect in the December 8 trial, will have the opportunity Monday to speak for the last time at a court meeting. Subsequently, the treatment of the criminal case is closed against him. We do not know if he will use this right up to the last word. During the past eighteen years in which the Surinam Martial Court has handled the case, Bouterse has never been personally present. He was always represented by his lawyer.

Besides Bouterse, suspects Jimmy Stolk and Etienne Boerenveen are also entitled to the last word on Monday. The public prosecutor demanded twenty years in prison against Bouterse and Boerenveen and an acquittal was requested for Stolk. These suspects and 22 others are judged for their involvement in the killing of fifteen Surinamese opponents and bouters in December 1982. Of the 25 suspects, five have died in recent years.

After the last possible word of Bouterse, Boerenveen and Stolk, the court of war will take into account the guilt or innocence of these suspects, then pronounce a verdict. The other suspects are also entitled to the last word, but no date is yet known. Their case is still at a different stage of treatment.

Essed acts as a representative of the relatives of the victims of the murders committed in 1982.
