According to the NOS, it will be possible to offer a flexible contract for three consecutive years from 2020. For the moment, the maximum period is two years. From that point on, the probationary period is extended and employers are allowed to give employees a five-month probationary period.

Probation period gets longer

According to the government, employers are often reluctant to give someone a permanent contract after two years. They prefer to put the employee on the street. The government thinks that after three years of flexible contracts, employers are more inclined to give a contract of indefinite duration.

The longer probationary period has the same purpose. If an employer offers an open-ended contract, a maximum probation period of five months may apply. It's three months for contracts of more than two years. At the present time, a maximum probation period can be two months

A more expensive flex, easier dismissal

The FNV feared that the risk of an indefinite contract would only decrease and the CNV union said that these projects only took the flexibilisation in their hands. Employers also had their own complaints. They are disappointed that temporary work becomes more and more expensive. If employers immediately offer an open-ended contract, they pay a lower unemployment premium.
