The kidnapping of a chicken caused a remarkable session in court today. No fewer than three judges wondered whether the kidnapping was a robbery or a heroic act by animal activist Sandra van de Werd.
It sounds so simple: someone removes a chicken and gets caught for it. Nevertheless, several chambers today attended a session on the Kip Jip case.
This chicken was used in 2016 for a project by student theater student Rick Busscher. In addition, he invited his comrades to vote whether or not the Kip Jip was slaughtered. With his project, Busscher wanted to raise awareness about meat consumption.

Van de Werd was aware of the project and did not want Kip Jip to be the victim of An experience. That's why she decided to take the chicken out of Theaterschool Amsterdam's cafeteria. "I thought it was such an emergency that I wanted to save that chicken anyway," she says.
Six hours in the cell
The animal activist is caught and has to spend six hours in the cell. She was also fined 209 euros.
Up to now, Van de Werd has refused to pay this fine. According to her, it's a matter of principle and she saved an animal from death. However, the prosecution does not consider that its rescue action justifies theft.

According to the PPS, the experience would have served a reasonable purpose. "I think if it had been asked Kip Jip herself, she would have said that she wanted to commit to the good cause," according to the prosecutor.
